About Sarah Sheehy
A professional horse trainer and riding instructor since 1982, Sarah initially gained riding experience taking lessons from trainers in northern California. She showed successfully as a junior and amateur in hunters, equitation, medals, and dressage.
Sarah’s wide range of experience in and out of the show ring led her to varied full-time, assistant trainer positions. This gave her the opportunity to participate in clinics with top hunter/jumper and dressage trainers from around the country. In addition, she further focused on developing her dressage skills with upper level dressage instructors.
In 1990, Sarah started her own training business in Northern California’s Marin County. For the next twelve years she trained and showed hunters, dressage, and pleasure horses. During that time she was introduced to what is often called "natural horsemanship" by her dressage instructor and friend, Terry Church, who had worked with Tom Dorrance for several years.
With this influence, Sarah began to specialize in rehabilitating horses from the racetrack as well as hunters, jumpers, and dressage horses who were having difficulty fitting into traditional roles. She also starts the young ones under saddle, gives green horses a solid foundation, and works with horses that have developed troubled behavior. While schooling horses, Sarah uses an approach of mindful horsemanship that helps each horse progress with the time and patience they need.
